whats do people mean when they say their hamster went into heat? also what do you mean your hamster SPRAYED you??

Can I get my hamster fixed?
How much would it cost on average to get my hamster fixed...she is female would it make her stop spraying?

when hamsters go into heat that means they can mate or...have babies. sprayed? umm peeed? i think lol. or possibly on the mentral (spelling?) cycle.

Here is the info you requested from me all about hamsters! I really hope this helps and sorry i have to post it hear. there wasnt enough room in the email thingy lol!

Here is a list of supplies you will need:

food (i get animal planet hamster and gerbils food)

wood chip bedding. ASPEN only. Hamsters can get allergic reactions from other types of wood chips

Cage. get a glass cage because plastic ones are cool but are seriously a PAIN in the butt to clean and they can break easily. (trust me on this. seriously you will end up returning it like i did. and my hamster broke its leg because of a gap in between the tube and the top part where they can climb to) Plus they are cheaper. I suggest getting one thats 1 foot by 1 foot. possibly bigger depends on what type of hamster you get. ask them what size they suggest.

checkered wire to make a lid for the cage. Hamsters are master escape artists so u must have a lid. One time my gerbils got on top of their wheel and tried to push the lid off! Lol!! But they might have one to go with your glass cage at the petstore. Ask them! Or try a hardware store.

water bottle

two food dishes. one for their regular food and one for fruits and veggies. (the second one u dont need in there all the time)

fruits and veggies (stay away from exotic fruites like mangos and plums and peaches)small amounts once or twince a week. cut into little peices. can cause diareah if fed too much. and eww who wants to clean that lol

plastic wheel cause wire ones are squeaky. >must clean 1-2 times a week cause they pee in there.

Vitamin drops (put into water) to help maintain a healthy pet. this isnt neccisary but very good for them

plastic ball to run around your room in. (never leave ur hammie in there more then 15 and please watch him while he is in there!)

Treats! They love to get treats once in a while!

Tube get the plastic tubes for him to go in! They are colorful and spice up your glass cage! :-)

and last but on least....A HAMSTER!

(all together this should cost $50-70 depending on size of wheel/food bowl/cage etc)

When you get you pet make sure that he is lively and not sickly looking. His eyes should be clear and his nose should be pinky and his hair should be thick not thin. beware: if the hair is too thin they could be selling them too soon!!! This could cause health issues. never get a sickly pet because you are sorry for it. You will just end up haveing to pay a ton of vet bills.

When picking out a type of hamster you want: I wouldnt get a dwarf hamster if you want to be able to play with them. Dwarfs are small and run VERY fast and can jump out of your hands. Therefore if he gets loose you wont be able to catch him. But if u want a fun pet to watch then get a dwarf. (i have a "robo" dwarf and he is the cutest thing ever! but i cant pick him up. to put him in his ball i ahve to take off the lid and set it in there and wait for him to crawl in it.) the best dwarfs to hold (i think personally but u may wanna check up on it in so websites) are the winter white siberian dwarfs (i used to have one).
Teddy bears and syrians are the best to have if you want to hold. They tend to bite more when startled but no matter the type of hamster they will nip when scared. (u should kno that though. they are still animals)

holding your new pet:

Okay dont try and pick him up the first couple of days!!! Instead only stick your had in there to change water and food. Its a new enviorment and they are freaked out. After 2-3 days of watching him and talking to him gently stick your hand in palm down and let him sniff you (switch to a non-scented soap because you will smell good and he'll want to bite you). He may bite but dont be dicouraged!! :-)
after a couple of days flip your hand around and let him crawl around put a little peice of fruit or sunflower seed (from food bowl) so he can get it from ur hand. after a while he will get used to this and you cna pick him up a couple of inches off the ground. do this a couple of days. until you can pick him up and hold him.

Also when your hammie is out of food. it doesnt neccisarily mean he needs more. They are horders which means they have pouches in their cheeks and they take it and hide it from you. ONly fill their bowl 2/3 of the way up.

When giving them fruites and veggies dont keep it in their cage more then 2 hours because it will spoil. never mix it in with regular food!!

Hamsters are nocturnal which means they sleep during the day and play at night. So dont be freaked if you hear him in the middle of the night. You will get used to it. dont worry (unless u keep him in another room). If you dont like this i suggest getting a gerbil. They can be a wake both during the day and night.

If u get a plastic/wire cage (either kno i dont suggest it) they will climb the wire part and chew on it. Dont worry he wont hurt himself.

Hamsters teeth never stop growing so you must have hard stuff for him to chew on!!! I suggest empty toliet paper rolls! they loves those to go inside and chew on! (never put toliet paper in there for bedding. They can eat it and it can clog their stomach and die)

Hamster love to burrow! so make sure his bedding is 11-2 inches thick!!!!

NEVER PUT TWO HAMSTER TOGETHER! They are VERY territorial!!!!! They will kill each other! Even if they are together when they are babies. after 2-3 months they WILL fight!

Change their bedding: once a week. it gets smelly!

If u get the glass cage put it somewhere that there is NO direct sun light. It might get too hot for your little hamster and they will die! and no place where there is a draft. They might get too cold. And if you have other pets (like dog or cat) dont put them on the floor or where their cage can be knocked over.

Did i already say change water daily? umm if i didnt then now i did lol. I usually change mine before school and right before i go to sleep.

Also the best time to play with ur hamster is in the evening. Dont ever wake ur hamster up because they are VERY cranky when they wake up and hate it.
