why does the phantom of the opera wear a mask and....?

what happened in that movie. I haven't seen it and I would like a detailed description of all that went on.

I saw it while ago.
The reason the phantom wears a mask is because he is disfigured. He has been that way since he was a child.
The main plot is how the phantom falls in love with a young opera singer who is in a relationship with another man. This causes the phantom to become angry and he continuously committs crimes around the opera house. Ultimately, he wants to kill the youg singer's lover.

The phantom does not kill the lover. Instead, he lets the couple live happily. Nevertheless, he is still a presence in the singer's life.

Okay, and the plot goes like this:
Christine's music teacher is the Phantom, the phantom is a musical genius and teachers her how to sing....she goes to sing at the opera but they won't have her because they have their prima donna (even though christine is better) so the Phantom (who lives underneath the opera house) tries to have them killed.

Meanwhile, the phantom is in love with christine and christine is under his spell. But then she falls in love with Raoul and leaves the phantom. :-(

So after she abandoms the Phantom he comes back to try to take her away. She has to choose, but she chooses Raoul. The Phantom then dies of sadness while the Theater people are going down under the opera house to catch him. When they get there, he has died and all that is left of him is his mask.

Krazykat, the Phantom did NOT die. At the end of the movie, when it shows Old Raoul putting the monkey on Christine's grave, he sees a fresh red rose with a black ribbon and the ring Christine gave the Phantom. So after all those years, that tells us that the Phantom still loved Christine and visited her grave after she died.
