"As in mythology, social values are reflected in the poetry of Carl Sandburg and John Frederick Nims." I don't really mean to say 'social values', because I will be talking about pessimistic/optimistic views on existence in mythology and poetry. Is there a better phrase than "social values" to express this?

If you are talking about viewpoints in the paper, then you should use the word "viewpoints" in your thesis. Remember that a good thesis statement tells the reader exactly what your paper will contain - try to be as specific as you can :)

Like in Mythology, the poetry of Carl Sandberg and John Frederick Nims depict the great ambitions and tragedies that myths are made up of!

Hope this works!

All the best!

Cheers!
