I don't really mean to say 'social values', because I will be talking about pessimistic/optimistic views on existence in mythology and poetry. Is there a better phrase than "social values" to express this?

If you are talking about viewpoints in the paper, then you should use the word "viewpoints" in your thesis. Remember that a good thesis statement tells the reader exactly what your paper will contain - try to be as specific as you can :)
"As in mythology, differing viewpoints are reflected in the poetry of Carl Sandburg and John Frederick Nims."
