Andy P is ALMOST correct. When you castle you move your king ONLY two spaces right or left and then the castle jumps to the space last passed over by the king. The king is not moved "next to the castle" if you are castling on the Queen's side (long castle). Another castling rule that Andy P left out is the king cannot castle if the castling move causes him to pass over any squares that are being attacked by an opponents piece. And you can only castle once per game.

Good luck and "castle early!"

Castle is a defensive move. In order to castle there are couple of things you need to keep in mind, 1. there must be no pieces between the King and Castle and both the Castle and the King must be in there original starting place. 2 The King cannot castle if he has been put in check, he cannot castle to get out of check and he cannot castle into check. When you Castle, move your King 2 spaces next to the Castle and jump the Castle over the King. The Castle will be next to the King when your done
