I have two small children, two large dogs, a cat, and a bird, so I use it a LOT! It seems like we go through vacuums like crazy! Anyone know a good one that won't break down after six months?

It's time to invest in a high quality vacuum. I don't have that many carpeted surfaces but I have two pugs and a lot of people in my house allll the time so there is constantly dirt and dog hair everywhere.

I used to buy like 150-200$ vacuums like twice a year but then realized how much I was wasting and invested in the high quality Dyson. I LOVE IT!

It gets alllll the dirt and dog hair out and fluffs the carpet really well.

You don't have to get the 500$ like I did but they have ones for closer around 350 maybe and they're soooo worth it.

Good luck.

I have 8 kids and know what you mean by vacuums not holding up. I did the 50-100 dollar vacuum purchase every 6-12 months and finally wised up and bought higher quality products that last longer. When the kids help, things just naturally seem to get damaged. (LOL)

I had a Riccar upright that lasted 4 years and now have a Dyson Animal purple which I think is a mixed bag as far as usability and quality. It does clean well and doesn't lose suction. That said, it's not very stable when using the on board extension wand and hose. I also don't like the high number of plastic parts on the unit.

The thing that finally sold me on the unit however was that Dyson is now offering a 5 year warranty. There's a link below that shows the 5 year warranty on the dc14 animal if you need more information on the warranty. Don't let the prices on the site scare you away from considering these vacuums however.

I bought that same unit from Bed-Bath and Beyond on sale with a coupon I received in the mail. My final price was just under 300 dollars.

Sanitaire by the way is the commercial line from Electrolux which is a quality name.

I suggest checking around and deciding what features you need in a vacuum cleaner. Then decide on what type of unit to get. Bag/bag-less Upright or canister, and if HEPA filtration is important. True HEPA units will keep the air cleaner in your home and that's important if anyone suffers from allergies.

Buy higher quality even if you need to go used. Kirby has been around forever and is known for quality but they're very heavy so there's trade-offs no matter what unit you get.

YES!!! Regardless of how much they advertise that ridiculously overengineered and overpriced Dyson, I have found in my housekeeping business that he Bagless Bissel Powerforce, from Wal-Mart which is about $50-$90 depending on your location or whether it's on sale........ is by FAR the best vacuum, and will last you a long time, for the following reasons:

1. All the filters are washable, and all the parts are accessable WITHOUT tools. So no matter how many feathers and dog hair and cat hair gets clogged in there, you can always get it out - without paying a vacuum store to do it, and without hunting down those tools that never seem to be in the drawer when you need them.

2. It's inexpensive.

3. I have cleaned some of the most ungodly messes (I specialize in rental evictions that no other cleaners will do) and the Bissel Powerforce goes on and on!!!

4. It is lightweight.

There are lots of versions of this vacuum...I have tried the Bissel with the detachable canister that you can carry around - that one is ok, but kind of redundant and heavy. I hope you will like this vacuum as much as I do - I think you will!

We have 2 dogs, 3 cats and a very messy bird. Have to vacuum every day and found that with the pet hair a vacuum that does not have a bag, but a dust cap that is easy to dump. The best brand, one that is used by most commercial cleaners, is a Sanitaire. Here is a link for a great vacuum for under $300 and free shipping.

I have 2 boys and two dogs and I spent a little more than 300 on my Dyson (pet hair edition) it's purple and blue so it looks crazy but man what a sweeper. Never seen one work so well and it's pretty tough and versitile. Well worth the money. Go to Overstock.com or Target and get one they ARE all they are cracked up to be.
