-4 + 5x - 4 = 5x - 8, since both 4's are negative

2-12 would be -10. Since you are starting with 2 and taking away 12. Think of it as counting backwards by 12 (2, 1, 0, -1, -2, etc.).

So now be have (5x - 8) / -10. Now we simplify it by making it:

(5x/ -10) - (-8/-10)

In the first part both the numerator in the denominator can be divided by 5, so you end up with x/2 or (1/2)x

In the second part both the numerator and the denominator can be divided by -2, so you end up with 4/5.

this leaves you with

x/2 - 4/5
