x² - 8 + 4 = 0

x² - 4 = 0

x² - 4 + 4 = 0 + 4

x² = 4

√x² = ± √4

x = ± 2

- - - - - -

Check for +

x² - 8 + 4 = 0

(2)² - 8 + 4

4 - 8 + 4 = 0

-4 + 4 = 0

0 = 0

- - - - - - -

Check for -

x² - 8 + 4 + 0

( - 2)² - 8 + 4 = 0

4 - 8 + 4 = 0

- 4 + 4 = 0

0 = 0

- - - - - - s-

x^2-12=0
x^2=12
x=+-sqrt(12)

If that -8 should have been -8x, then
x^2-8x+4=0
using quadratic formula
x=0.54 or x=7.46
