The 1918 World Series featured the Boston Red Sox, who defeated the Chicago Cubs four games to two. The Series victory for the Red Sox was their fifth in five tries, going back to 1903.

The 1918 Series was played early in September due to the World War I "Work or Fight" order, and remains the only World Series to be played entirely in September. It was marred by players threatening to strike due to low gate receipts. There were also rumors of a "fix", but there was no solid evidence and, with the war dominating the news, nothing came of it.

The first guy got it right, so I'll just point out an interesting side light. For many years, the Sox had 4 retired numbers,

9 Ted Williams
4 Joe Cronin
1 Bobby Doer
8 Carl Yastremski

For many years, they had those numbers displayed in that order on the right field facade at Fenway which also designated the date the Rox had clinched their last WS, 9/4/18.

1918 - it was moved up to improve morale in the US, the US was just about to launch a major offensive that would end the war. And players could play or fight.
