I have a 1996 Golf GTi. I was driving around in traffic today and it started to to get a bit tricky to get it into first gear. Over about ten minutes it was getting harder to get it into first and from first to second. I stopped at a roundabout and when I went to pull off it wouldn't go into first or second but it would go into reverse so I reversed to the side of the road and turned the engine off. With the engine off it would go into first so i started it in gear and drove to a spot to get picked up by the recovery vehicle. Now that I am home first gear seems to be working again? Any ideas what is wrong?

Call the dealership and give them all the specs on your car and ask if the transmission is sychronous or nonsychronous. I sounds like you maybe having problems with your sychronizers. You may need to just take it in and have it checked by a technician. Your sychronizers messing up maybe an easy and not too costly fix but continuing to drive it like that may cause damage elsewhere. I know not something you want to hear but I just tell you what I think.

Sounds like the clutch; the fact that it started to play up in traffic tends to support this, as the clutch will have become "hot & bothered". All clutches begin to give their notice in these circumstances. Now you're home, it's cooled down.

Check your clutch linkage. If on a cable, the cable will stretch causing the clutch not to fully disengage.

You have a worn out synchronizer ring between first and second. The transmission needs to be rebuilt.
