Its the end of primary education. Key stage two covers the ages 7 - 11, and the tests, SATs are taken at age 10, to determine what level the children renter at secondary school, key stage three.

The National curriculum is set out to get children to a basic level at 'key' phases of the childs development.

3-4 year olds is called foundation
4-5 year old is called reception (Nursery School education)
5-7 years is called key stage one, the old infant school level, and is tested at year two (age 7)

7-11 is the key stage two, primary or Junior School
tested at year 6, (age 11)

11-14 is key stage three, Secondary education, kids are tested at age 14 (year 9)

Key stage 4 is 14-16, some kids take thier GCSE's early at 15 (year 10) most take them at the end of thier compulsory education, 16 (year 11)

The tests won’t give you a complete picture of how your child is doing at school – they provide a “snapshot”, showing how they performed in selected parts of a subject on a particular day. But schools can use the test results as an independent measure of how they, and their pupils, are doing compared to standards across the country. Your results show just how much you have forgotten in the last 14 years, compounded by the booze lol

primary.

Key Stages and the National Curriculum
All pupils aged 5 to 16 in state schools must be taught the National Curriculum.

This is divided into four 'Key Stages' which depend upon children's ages (at the end of the school year) :
Key Stage 1 is reception, years 1 and 2 (5 to 7 yrs old)
Key Stage 2 is year groups 3 to 6 (ages 8 to 11)
Key Stage 3 is year groups 7 to 9 (ages 12 to 14)
Key Stage 4 is year groups 10 and 11 (ages 15 and 16)

Year Groups 12 and 13 (ages 17 and 18) are referred to as Post 16.
