I work in the tourism industry for Illinois, and I work in the Chicago tourism industry workspace, so I have lots of information. But the first question always is...what are YOU interested in? Do you want dining/dancing? Do you want theatre? Do you want culture/museums/architecture/history? How much time do you have to spend here?

Planning for these kinds of questions helps on your end and ours in helping you to plan a really fulfilling time here in Chicago. It's a HUGE city with a great deal to do, so it helps to narrow the criteria margins. You can log onto www.877chicago.com, or www.cityofchicago.org to get more ideas before you arrive.

Personally, I think either the Sears Skydeck or the Handcock Observatory would offer an interesting view, and some city history as well. Any tour that the Chicago Architectural Foundation offers is wonderful. The Chicago Greeters offer a more personable tour of localized areas. Have a Chicago Hotdog at America's Dog at it's various locations. Museum Campus offers The Field Museum of Natural History, The Adler Planetarium, and the Shedd Aquarium...all within walking distance in the same campus!

I think you are getting the idea! I would recommend coming in to the Chicago Cultural Center in the Loop and checking in with the folks at the Chicago Tourism information desk for the best help. I hope THIS helps, and I hope you have a great stay in Chicago! (By the way, and it will help - The "L" is the ELivated train system above ground around Chicago. The 'subway' refers to the track routes underground. This may impress friends and family! But it's true.....)

Skip Navy Pier, it's a tourist trap...I suggest you go to Wrigleyvile and soak up some of the local grub and bars. Try the Cubby Dog for a great Chicago dog and Sluggers/Murphy's for a great bar..especially if you're there in baseball season.

You should plan a day in the Grant Park area where you can tour Soldier Field, The Shedd Aquarium (AWESOME), the Field Museum and Millenium Park.

The Museum of Science and Industry is my favorite museum in the city. MSI has a ton of fun hands-on exhibits and is not nearly as dry as the field museum.

And of course you have to go to the Water Tower Place to shop and Michigan Avenue.

Eat Giordano's pizza, make sure you get a Maxwell Street Polish, a 30 sack of White Castles and a real Gyro from a greek place (if the English on the menu is misspelled you're looking in the right place!)

If you're on the South Side stop by Snookies in Hegewisch for Chi Town thin crust pizza, (Giordano's is the Deep Pie)

Try to go in June for the taste of Chicago or in March for the St. Patty's festivities.

Baseball season is awesome too but make sure you get Bleacher seats and bring sunblock!

It's the greatest city on Earth, enjoy it, and never stop eating!

I am going to take you off the beaten path a bit and bring you north of Chicago into Wisconsin. You see, Milwaukee is just a few hours from there and on the way going up I-94 you can visit the Mars Cheese Castle in Kenosha. That is a very interesting place to go to and you get LOTS of free samples. Then in Milwaukee there are free brewery tours and tons of things to see there. Its a really nice day trip from Chicago.

Something that you might want to try is the Jerry Springer Show. Call about 3 weeks in advance and you can get free tickets to that show. Believe me, it is so worth it! My husband and I had a true blast at it. It was a once in a lifetime thing.

Hope you have a great visit to our area. Just be safe and have fun.

When I lived in Milwaukee My husband and I would make a trip to Chicago just for Chinese food in Chinatown. Many great options. When we would stay longer the Art Institute and Navy Pier were stops.
