Yes, but this can be a big project for someone that has never done this.
I would suggest a western digital hard drive, they have a utility that will allow you to copy whats on the old drive to the new one.

Click on my picture for an email link, I can send you links and help set it up, if you have another computer available, and instant messenger I can help make the process a bit less painfull......

Windows 98 PCs working on the old Intel Celeron and Pentium II/III chipsets/motherboards are known to be limited to 40 GB (sometimes automatically to 32 GB) hard disk sizes. So it is advisable that you upgrade your system without wasting more money unless thinking of 40 GB. Note, however, that you can always add another (secondary channel) IDE hard disk if there is a spare (UDMA) Parallel ATA 40/42-pin cable on the motherboard. You can also physically interchange the primary and secondary drives to suit your needs and then format or partition them to reinstall the OS afresh. This can solve your space requirements somewhat.

Yes.

If you have a desktop computer you probably need an EIDE drive. Check with your manual or you manufactures site to be sure. Also check that your bios / computer can support the 80 GB drive.

it should work, though you'll likely need to buy a data transfer kit to transfer everything over... but um, why are you still running windows 98, your about 3 OS's behind vista...
