You may have changed the editing options.
Click on the Tools menu and select Options. Click on the Edit tab to bring it to the front.
Under 'Editing Options' see if there is no tick before 'Typing Replaces Selection'. If not, click on it and click OK, and you should be able to use the backspace to delete selected text as before.

I suggest: Tools>Options. Select the Edit Tab and make sure Typing Replaces Selection checkbox is checked.

Try holding down shift and using the arrow keys, then pushing backspace.

Also, I would turn off the computer, unplug the keyboard, and while you at it, mouse plugs. Blow air into them to get rid of any dust.

Plug them back in, turn on the computer. Problem should be fixed.

Why do I have the feeling that you've not updated your MS Office Service Pack?

Please use this link to update it : http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/default.aspx

Please click on the yellow shiny button on the right hand top there under "check for Updates".

While you're there, you might want to check out all those great freebies that you can download and install, too!

Hope this helped!

Cheers!
