First you must know the Zone you live in. In Florida we are zones a little 8, 9 and 10. Very little really cold weather.

Then look at a local nursery in your area for Perennials (they come back year after year.) Full Sun. Start reading the labels. Or check your library for some books covering your zone.

Check on a seed rack in a Walmart or Kmart on the side and you will find zones for the entire US.

The other thing is to look around at neighbors full sun yards and see what they have.

Good Luck.

Just look for Perennials at the garden store and then look at the tag to see if it is for full sun. Ask there to make sure they work for your zone. There are many more for sun than for shade so you will have a lot of choices. Try Cone Flower, Painted Daisy, Butterfly Bush, Iris, Day Lilies, Peony, among others. Some of the Bi-Annuals are also fun and they come back by reseeding themselves. Look for Hollyhocks, Moonflowers, and Larkspur. While you are waiting for your Perennials to spread and fill your garden, you might enjoy planting a few things from seed that give you color all summer and are lots of fun like Sunflowers, Poppies, and Zinnias. All the things I've recommended are easy for beginners but I still think you need a good book on gardening. The library or home improvement store are good places to browse and find what you like. Good Luck and God Bless
