You allow a little belching at the dinner table, then a little gas passing in church...before long you have TOTAL SOCIAL UNREST! I guess it's just out of consideration for the other people around you that you don't take that selfish opportunity to really project a loud belch at the table. Use the napkin as a muffler and let it out slowly to savor the flavor! Bon Appetit.

depends on what part of the world you are in..I would not have a problem with it but then I do not attend very many elegant dinner parties...I say belch away and let the gas fall where it may! LOL

because it sounds disgusting and that's why it's rude.
whenever someone belches, it makes people think about digested food, like poop.
when people are eating, especially at an elegant party, they probably don't want to picture digested food.

If you are in the general area of the U.S.A. then it's considerd gross and disgusting to burp after eating, but if you happen to be in certain other parts of the world, it's rude not to burp.
