Im trying to remove the starter on a 1987 mustang and cant find a way to reach the top starter bolt does anyone know of a way to do this

Use several extension bars and a U-joint. When I changed the starter on a '86 Capri with a V6 (same chassis and starter location) I had the wrech in the fenderwell, driving a set of extension bars over a foot long in total.

take the socket in hand, reach up in there, and make certain you have the right size.put an extention between the socket and ratchet and go at it.
Yah I have done this befor, and yah I know there clearence issues, limited room to work up under there.this is ware analictical thinking happens you may have to use very long extentions, and maybe breaker bars, coming at it from some weird and different directions. If it becomes necessary to jack the car way up, use big chunks of tree stumps under the frame for support.
I don't much trust jack stands, unless their rated good enough to hold up a fully loaded dump truck.

Believe SAE bolt 3/8 course OEM had 1/2 Hex generally Reeplcement will have 9/16 Hex generally/. Does old bolt have metric rating such as 8.8 9.9 10.8 ??

i own a repair shop,and there really isn't an easy way to do those,you might be able to get to it from the top a little better though ,but on those ,there's no hidden secrets to getting them off,go at it the best way you can ,good luck,i hope this helps.
