The major things to start with are composition, perspective, and life drawing. these are essential.
If you really want to be succesfull one thing you have to keep in mind is that you aren't that great, and there are a tonn of people who know alot more then you. Every time you take an art course try and learn everything you can from that person.
I go to an animation school and the people who do the best are the ones who accept their weaknesses and strive to overcome them. The ones who do the worst are the ones who cling to what they're good at and think they're wonderful because they never grow.
Figure out what field of art you want to persue then start looking for a college or university. Try to find one that has a very strong base in fundimentals. The stronger you are at the basics the better you will be over all.
Don't be concerned with going to the best named school. Find a school that has the right environment for you to learn in. Reguardless of how high end the school is, the most important thing is that you learn something.
When you finish school the employers will be looking at your portfolio not the school you went to.

Practice, practice, practice! Building a good portfolio in order to get into art school should be a priority. You should start looking at art schools and career choices as soon as possible (they're everywhere!) and start checking them out. You could be a studio artist, illustrator, etc. Make sure you take advantage of classes locally and in your school. Practice and education is key-keep in mind that it does take a well-known college degree to get the most ($$) out of most visual arts jobs-unless you're just amazing.
