I have a 2001 Sunfire that won't start. When I turn the key to start the car, it makes a loud noise. It sounds like a jack hammer. What do you think this is?

It sounds like you have a problem with either the starter or the battery.

1st, ensure that the battery is fully charged, put it on a battery charger for about an hour and that will be enough. Then try to start your car, if it still does the same thing then the problem is in your starting system. If it starts the you have a problem in your charging system.

2nd, if it is in the starting system, ensure that you are getting proper voltage to the starter, from both the battery(12v), the ignition(5v), and a proper ground. If everything is good THEN tap on the starter and give it a try. It could also be that you might have a bad relay or wire.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Sorry Timing belt....should be changed every 60,000 to 80,000 miles. Don't try and start it again or you could do major damage if u haven't already. Get an estimate and see whether the car is worth keeping. Sorry I wish I could give you better news. If it's not extremely loud or a clicking sound, then your starter motor or battery is dead...but you said it is like a jack hammer, so I am assuming it is loud.

The change that you're coping with is the snatch protection change. For sorting out and couple of minutes period ideas, pull that out and run a jumper twine to both contacts that the change made contact with. Use a twine it truly is as heavy a gage or more desirable. If this works, that change has failed or is out of adjustment.

it could be a few things (none of them are good) it could be a bad starter, this is the cheapest and easiest one. I could be a stripped ring gear on the flywheel, or on a high mileage car you may have broken a timing belt.

it could be a low battery and if not that a starter. its hard to give the answer without being there to look at it but that would be my guess..try jumpstarting it and if that dont work find the starter and give it a few TAPS not bangs sometimes it works..well good luck i hope this helps
