If it can be a research project vs. an experiment, I'd recommend hunting for fossils in a specific area and looking up their lifestyles based on their morphology to infer the environmental conditions they lived in.

As an example, if you find crinoids, you know you were in the photic zone because they need light.

Trilobites with eyes also show this.

Big flat things or things with lots of spines sticking out of their sides may have used these factors to stay on top of soft sediment and mud.

Fossils are fun to hunt for, and there's a lot of good resources for beginning fossil hunters that allow you to figure out a lot about the environment from your finds.
