The computer memory chips do not store anything permanently. They are used by windows and programs for temporary storage. Your PC's hard drive is what holds all your important data. If your hard drive crashed and caused your computer failure then everything that was on it is most likely lost.

Huh? What do you mean by memory chip?

Nothing really, if your referring to RAM! All your stuff is on the hard drive ! If you tend to get a new computer, save your hard drive! I recently decided to try to resurrect an old computer in the garage! I took out the hard drive and put it on my new computer! It installed and booted up Windows ME. It was kind of exciting finding all my old stuff ! Save your RAM too, it may come in handy one day!

Which memory chip?

The cmos contains your 'bios'

your ram contains nothing unless there is power, then it loads the operating system and any applications you are running.

the hard disk contains your operating system, all program files, documents, etc.
