I do indeed agree with this. It will help people to be able to vote, knowing who and what they're voting for, instead of just punching random holes. When a person finds out what the think doesn't matter if they can't read, if they have any desire to become better than what they are, they will reach for the stars, as in education. The more the common person knows, the less government can control we the people. Also, it will save tax dollars to be used on something else more necessary for America, than printing ballots in foreign languages for those unwilling to learn English, which is our language. That right there will cause a better communication between peoples of different races, when we accept a common language. It will be a great factor in uniting us all. Isn't the what the United States of America should be?

Voting is a responsibility of being a citizen. It is the wrong encouragement if literacy is the goal.

The punish and they shall change ideal doesn't work very well. In general it only causes a lot of hard feelings and it would cause a lot of strife for more than just the people who can't read.

Even most illiterate people can recognize names. It isn't a needed requirement.

There are already to many people that dont use their right to vote, voting is a citizen right, you cant demand someone be literate in order to vote. And I think if literacy was a requirement even less people would vote.

No, the illiterate and the uninformed probably do not care about voting. It is better that way. No one should be voting unless they understand the issues and know what is going on in the world.

It would certainly prevent another George Bush being elected.

It was the dummies and freaks who elected him combined with the thinking people not bothering to vote.

No, it will discourage people (poor people) from voting, which is just what the Republicans would like. It is not necessary to be literate to have an intelligent opinion about who should be elected.
