No, you won't have to worry about blood in her cage, if that's your concern.

Hamsters are the best excape artists, though- you'll spend the next two years finding her and putting her back in her cage.

If you get a pair of hamsters, make sure both are female. Their gestation period is SIXTEEN DAYS!!! The shortest of any mammal. And they have anywhere from 6 to 14 babies at a time.

Female hamsters go in heat every 4-5 days and some have been known to have a few drops of blood during this time. They do however get a musky smell that can really stink. I've been sprayed by more then one female in heat and it's not roses. I have 7 females and 11 males -all Syrians plus 2 Russian dwarf females and 6 Russian dwarf males (never to be bred). I find that the Syrian males are more laid back then the females. Most of our females are more jumpy in all our small animals (36). We have m/f rats, males are calmer, m/f mice, males are calmer too and our m/f rabbits are the same way also. I would suggest a male for 2 reasons: no suprize babies from a female and as stated before, the males do tend to be calmer. Young hamsters however, need to be worked with in either sex since they most likely weren't handled as often.

I hope this helps in your decision.

This is info I found on the web
Female hamsters don't have menstual cycles but once or twice in their life they may suffer from a small amount of vaginal bleeding. This bleeding is only very minor "spotting" and occurs for only a day or two. The cause for this is not known but it does not seem to be due to any illness.

Excessive or prolonged vaginal bleeding can be due to a uterine infection or other problem and should be investigated by a vet.
