there are two possible answers..but both seem to fit well..

boil is an extreme version of simmer. which one is the extreme version of scorch: Singe or Char? Singe is just burning a little bit while char is completely burning something all the way through until its black, right?

When you look them up in the dictionary, both of them (singe and char) include scorch as a synonym.

When you look up "simmer," in the dictionary it says that it is just BELOW boiling. So boiling is more extreme than simmer. I would choose the one that is more extreme than scorch (rather than the one that is less extreme). Good luck with your homework. You can do it!

And I would say it's the opposite... simmer is to lightly cook, while boil is to really heat up. So if scorch is your startying point, likened to simmer, then I think Char would be equal to boil.

singe would be right. It means to burn quickly. Char means to totally blacken
