i like both but i would go with the 30gb white iPod, because it plays music and video.

Those are both nice. I guess it depends upon how you think that she will use it most. Exercising? The big one may not be very comfortable to run with. Riding the train to work? The video on the big one would be great on a commute. You could also give her a gift certificate for either one and have her choose when she receives your gift.

I would go for the nano. Its got many functions, just enough memory, and 24 or so hours of battery life. While the video is heavy, too much memory and only like 3-4 hours of battery.
But in the end, its your choice...

All of the iPods are pretty much of proven quality. The one you buy will depend on how much you have to spend and keeping in mind how much she'll use it. The mini-iPods hold around 1K songs while the better ones hold as many as 20k songs.

they're both good ipods, but this depends on your mom's interests:
get the ipod video if:
- she likes to watch movies, and maybe brings a dvd portable around.. if she likes to watch on the go.
- if she really likes music, this one has more space.
- music videos, also.
- this one also holds a photo folder, so she can view photos if she likes, too.
get a nano if:
- you want to spend less
- you want color (the cover)
- videos cant go on this one, but the screen is in color.
- there is a photo folder
- its smaller, to fit in tighter spaces, like a tight purse, etc.
personally, i have the green ipod nano, because i like having small electronics, cell phone, laptop, camera, etc. its doing really well, and doesn't scratch easliy like the video. also, i've dropped it many times (whoops!!) and its still in great shape.. it looks like i just got it. i hope i helped!!
