I think you should tell your boss. #1, it may make him/her realize that you are a valuable employee and want to match the salary you have been offered, #2 it might make them want to give you that promotion sooner and #3 it may do just the opposite and show you that perhaps you are not as valuable to them as you may have thought and therefore give you a better feeling about taking a job that perhaps you weren't totally sure about taking.
If you are not actually interested in taking the job offer, do not mention it to your current boss, because it would be a bummer to try to play the "bigger salary" card and them tell you "good luck and be gone".
If you are interested in the job and are considering it, then you should most certainly tell them and put the ball in their court. And also, without fail, give them the proper notice if you do decide to take the job.

If you are actually planning to leave your current position you should do 2 things:

1.) Give 2 weeks and write a great resignation ensuring if your new position doesn't work out you can return due to the appropriate terms you left on.

2.) Explain during an exit interview the exact reasons why you are leaving so the company is more able to understand the circumstances.

If you would like to maintain your employment at the present positions you may want to arrange to meet with your Supervisor and disclose a copy of the offer you received to discuss a negotiation of your salary or plan for promotional opportunities.

I say it all depends on how much you like your boss. I might tell them, but maybe don't mention the pay raise? or don't make it a big deal. You may not want your boss always wondering if today's the day you'll leave for better money. Then again, if you don't care how your boss feels, then just giving two weeks notice shouldn't be a big problem to you. I always thought a month is a good length if your quitting would cause labor shortages.

You may not want to tell your boss that at all. You should give your current boss a letter of resignation at least 2 weeks in advance. If your boss ask why you are leaving just simply say for a better career opportunity.

You always want to stay in good standings with previous employers. They can give great referral letters to you.

Good luck with the new job!

You can if you think it will change that person's mind about how much they pay you. Otherwise, don't bother. Just give your 2 weeks notice, or not, and go where you want to go.

You should always be honest and upfront with your boss.
Who knows he may offer you more money to stay.
