My husband and I went to Guatemala twice last year. Both times we came back to America feeling SO RELAXED. The pace is so much slower in Guatemala. When we went to eat at a restaurant we were never hurried. In fact, each time we had to ASK for the check, otherwise they would have let us sit there for hours. We finally asked about this and were told that in Guatemala, most people DO sit there and talk after a meal for a very long time.

Also, after lunch time many shops closed for the afternoon. They would open back up later. But around 12 or so many places were shut down for a couple of hours for the workers to go home and relax. The shops would re-open and then stay open later at night.

The people there are VERY friendly as well. We never met anyone that was rude or irritated. Once my husband and I got home, we weren't even out of the airport before we were stressed out once more. Americans are so fast paced and in a hurry. It's almost like we are afraid to "not" have anything to do for awhile. It's against our nature. But I think a little rest sometimes would be nice.

The language. Indigenous population. Higher poverty in Guatemala. The government is dirty and guatemala is at the bottom of the barrel as far as Womens Rights in the Americas go. But the people are nicer, at least outside of guatemala city.
