I saw this movie a little while ago on TV. It was based in the 70s. It was about this boy, a highschooler who has been introduced to the world of rock n roll by his sister and after his sister leaves he starts to get into journalism. He then meets up with this not so well known band, he knows them though and wants to do a piece on them. He travels the country with them, along with this one girl who is sort of like a groupie. His mom is freaking out, one of the reasons being that she didn't really like the world of rock n roll.
Does anyone know what this movie is?

'Almost Famous' The semi-true story of Director Cameron Crowe who in real life got a job with Rolling Stone when he was only 15 years old, by lying about his age. The 'fictional' band in the movie is called STILLWATER (with actual songs written by Heart's Nancy Wilson (also Crowe's wife) and 70s icon Peter Frampton). The REAL band in real life that he went on tour with was The Allman Brothers Band. The reason they didn't use the Allman Brothers Band and made up a fictional band was because during this time when Cameron was on tour with them, Duane Allman died very tragically. If they had used the real band, then Duane's death would've overshadowed the rest of the movie. However, there was a real Penny Lane, who Cameron Crowe has kept her real identity a secret, to this day. Cameron was very young looking and when he was 20 years old, he went 'undercover' in a California high school to do research for a screenplay he was writing. That experience and screenplay became 'Fast Times At Ridgemont High'! How cool is that?!?!

Sounds like "Almost Famous" with Kate Hudson as one of the groupies. This young kid ends up travelling with the band. I think he writes for Rolling Stone, or something like that.
