it is actually both. many people like to think of it as a salad bowl with each group retaining it's shape and flavor, but there is still strong pressure to be an "american" which is a melting pot notion which transcends personal identity.

America has many active cultures,and most nations don't.In America most groups maintain somewhat separate ethnic identities,based on the race they are born-which helps define their music,soul,food,relives their history,and place in this country. And actually mixed raced is like an arm coming out of it's socket since most race groups actually don't permit someone different to get into their inner circle,not on a regular daily basis,that is,but sometimes permitted occassionally.
