You are allowed a step and a half, most guys take two though, ref will usually blow the whistle for anything more than that, depending on the player.

one step is allowed, except in the NBA where they haven't called a traveling violation since the early 80s.

You have to dribble while taking any steps unless you are driving to the rim, then you are allowed 3.
