First of all, spend the 10 dollars and go to the mall and get some adequate jewelry for god sakes.
Safety pins - HORRIBLE IDEA FOR BODIES. Safety pins are not solid metal - they usually have a shiny coating on them to make them pretty, but our bodies are very caustic - the finish of the pin will come off and you will have a "black ring" around your piercing's entry and exit hole that will not go away even when healed.
There is also nickle in the coating of a saftey pin. Not to mention, you have no idea what kind of metal the pin is made out of - there could be lead in the metal, in which case, you're poisoning yourself.
The best thing to do - ignore the ignorant people who've told you that you're stupid, (though, this wasn't the smartest way to go about this):
If it's placed perfectly and it looks exactly like you want it to, change the jewelry immediately to a 14g curved barbell or CBR that is made of Surgical Grade Stainless Steel (go to the mall, or a local piercing place and buy some jewelry).
If it's not exactly perfect, take it out and let it heal (care for it like any open wound). Then, go on EBAY and order a "navel piercing kit", which will come with a sterile 14g hollow tri-beveled piercing needle, some disposable clamps and the proper jewelry.
Why would you want to risk doing something half-assed that leaves a scar on your body? Do it right, or don't do it, I say. And a person CAN pierce their own bellybutton correctly - I have 2 - top and bottom.
Best wishes -
Rob

Well, I have to say that It probably was a bad idea, but now that you've done it, they key is to keep it clean. You should go to the local beauty supply store or ear-piercing teeny-bopper jewelry store in your mall and see if you can buy some of the solution that they give to people who've just gotten their ears pierced. It doesn't have alcohol or peroxide it in, which makes it a little more gentle on your skin and appropriate for cleaning an open wound (which is essentially what you have). Next, you will need to be sure to wash the area every day with anti-bacterial soap. You need to lather the area very well and move the safety pin up and down to get the soap inside. This will probably sting, but it will help keep the area from becomming infected. Finally, if the pain gets worse or the area begins to swell, or you just think that it might be getting infected, go to the doctor IMMEDIATELY. Good luck!

I think that you need to make sure that you keep the area clean around the piercing. I would clean the piercing with rubbing Alcahol three times a day. Dont wear tight shirts for the time being, and watch it carefully. If you notice it turning brown or a greenish color go to a pericing parlor, or your Doctor. If you sterilized the needle then you are probably fine. Just dint put a ring in for @ least a month. You should have got it dones professionally, but you will be fine:)...But if infection occurs get help immediately because you could get seriously sick.. Also keep a bandage over it. ( I wish I had your guts)

Sounds like a horrible idea. Unless you have a very large safety pin, the hole will close to be too small to wear jewelry in. Bellybutton piercings are also very prone to infection, and a safety pin is just asking to give you an infection. Not to mention the metal of the pin may be bad for the piercing, especially if it's one material coated in another that can rub off. I suggest going to a professional piercing place and asking them to help you.

My friend did hers with a safety pin of the bus last year and she didnt get an infection. But one problem that occured was the wholes werent spaced out enough for the peircing to look good cause her stomach around the peircing looked all scrunched up plus the wholes werent big enough for the piercing. So she let it close and then had her sister do it at home with a safety pin and it turned out great.
But just so that it doesnt get infected put rubbing alcohaul on it and then if u didnt when u did it take the pin out put i tover a flame then wipe it with alcohaul and put it back in. But do it very quickly so it doesnt close up.
Most piercings r done at home anyways...
HOPE THIS HELPS AND GOOD LUCK!
And put stuff like neosporn and antibacterial cream on it!

Good grief (and to the other thousands that have done it too)!!
As long as you THOROUGHLY cleaned the entire area where your piercing would have been at, STERILIZED BOTH the needle and safety pin (this is where many people I know have f-ed up here), then you probably would be okay. Also, make sure you keep cleaning the pierced area. I assume you have other piercings too; be aware of the same care steps you went through too.
On my behalf, I will never understand belly piercings. x]

Anything involving any part of your body being pierced by anything, be it a needle, a stake etc has got to be done professionally. Doing it with a safety pin is in the same league as scratching your arm with a needle and pouring in indian ink for a tattoo, not smart.

Hopefully you sterilized both the needle and the safety pin before you did it. If you didn't, you have just introduced infection-causing bacteria into your skin and you will most likely get an infection. Make sure you cleanse it well with antibacterial soap at least twice a day and put and antibacterial ointment on it like Neosporin or Polysporin.

providing you cleaned the needle and safety pin properly and you are keeping your new piercing clean then you should be fine and i would suggest to use a disinfectant daily to prevent infection, a friend of mine does tattoos and piercings so the advice has come from him. And make sure the pin isn't and doesn't go rusty

I don't think that was very smart to do. It can get infected, unless you keep it very clean. You may just have to continue to wear the safety pin ( which is not cute ), because the hole might not be big enough for a regular belly ring?
