An easy way to do subtractions like this is to round the numbers, then adjust the pennies. In this case, do 250-40=210 and then add 12 cents.

I did it in my head and got $210.12. All you have to do is lok at it, see that it was almost $40.00 being taken away which would be $210.00. Then add the $.12 that is the difference between 39.88 and 40.00.

Works for me.

Put a decimal point and two zeroes on the 250 if you're doing this on paper.
