It depends on the type of user. There are several category's of users:
Power User: Will always upgrade when a major upgrade is available
Power Gamers: Will upgrade only when it will helps gaming. They mainly upgrade to the best Graphics Card, Sound Cards and CPU/RAM.
Testers: They upgrade certain parts to help bench test new OSes or hardware.
Gamers: Unlike Power Gamers, Gamers only upgrade when their system starts to become incompatible with the games they enjoy playing. This usually means when the Game recommendations exceed the current system.
Users: Your typical users will only upgrade when the computer stops functioning. This could be 2 years, 5 years, 10 years or longer. I know a few people that are still using their 486's. But, on the average, this class of PC user normally keep a PC for about 5 - 10 years.

I'm using a three year old mac os x 10,2, that is no longer supported by Apple.
When Leopard comea out I'll buy a new computer, but only because I want the newest OS.
Hopefully, Apple will let me keep my new computer another three years without forcing me change due to lack of support.
