I was just watching footage of President Bush' trip to Bogota Columbia. They were showing large amounts of students burning the US flags and shouting hatred for the US.

1. Does the US supply any funds to this country? Reason being is I am really tired of these countries that we give money to with their hand out only to stab us in the backs with the other.

2. Why would they hate us so much? Have we done something to them? Serious answers please (e.g. ruined their biggest cocaine crop, bombed their capital, etc.??). I guess I am so focused on the Middle East that I have missed something that is going on here.

Denard: Your "people like you" comment is kind of unfair, idiotic and out of left field. I would just like to see a little more appreciation from all of these countries that call us all sorts of names and spit on us but yet take our money. I don't want to see anyone starve. I just would like to see them not bite the hand that feeds them.

Most people don't actually hate us...There are times the world likes piling on in public opinion and demonstrations. Columbia and large portions of Latin American have a history filled with images of Rich and Powerful dictators and romantic images of the revolutionaries who try to overthrow them. Most people are everyday common people. The demonstrations that you see are organized by one of these two groups to get attention or to throw bad karma on the US. But these demonstrations are paid and organized by someone not seen of TV. Images carry a lot of wieght. But... This too shall pass.

Chávez has charged that the intent of Bush's trip is "to divide Latin America." He's right. A main White House strategy for handling newly progressive governments has been to denounce the vaguely ominous dangers of "populism" and try to separate "good" Latin American leftists from "bad" ones. Bush has selected to visit countries where he thinks he can pull leaders away from a Chávez-led regional bloc.

But the real issues go far beyond Chávez, and those who want to pin our country's image problem in Latin America on a single antagonist ignore a central reality: Being on the U.S.'s good side hasn't been paying off too handsomely. In Brazil, where President Lula da Silva has worked to maintain good relations with the IMF and U.S. Treasury by largely adhering to neoliberal economic mandates, GDP growth over the past four years has averaged only 2.6 percent. This places Brazil alongside Haiti and El Salvador among the hemisphere's slowest growing economies. As Lula continues to structure his government's budgets around massive debt payments to wealthy lenders, he is left with little funding to devote to his flagship anti-hunger program and other social initiatives.

like others said I think it has to do with our power and influence. I think they percieve us as having influence over their lives and them lacking influence over ours, which by most measures, is true. Being the largest economic and military power also means that we have no equal rivals or peers, as such all our relationships will be unequal. Americans will never understand what it means to grow up in a third world country, therefore any sort of interference or aid is percieved almost as condescending, like that from a teacher to a student. It's also ironic, that the worst thing they can do to us is burn our flags and protest, while if people like you had their way, and we cut off aid, they would literally starve. The reason for most resentment against us is power, our power (benevolent or otherwise) over them, and their lack of power over us.

They hate all US Presidents. They threw manure at Clinton's limo and protested in Brazil.

They hate the USA because we are imperialists. Give me a thumbs down, but I am 100% right.

The USA tells them how to live their lives, how to govern, and who to like...and if they don't follow our rules...the USA will interfere even more.

South America has grown weary of our reckless interference in the region.
