Solder originally was made from tin and lead. For electronics the normal alloy is 63%tin and 37%lead. For other applications (say radiators) lower levels of tin are used. Now a days, there is such a thing as lead free solder in which the lead has been replaced by metals such as copper and silver. There have always been alloys like this but the use of lead in solder is becoming less and less and government regulations are now restricting the use of lead in electronics.

SOLDER IS USED TO JOIN TWO METALS, USUALLY COPPER TO COPPER. IN THE PAST, THE COPPER PLUMBING FITTINGS IN A HOUSE WAS JOINED BY 50/50 SOLDER, MEANING 50% LEAD AND 50% TIN. A FEW YEARS AGO THAT MIXTURE WAS NOT ALLOWED BECAUSE OF THE LEAD LEACHING OUT OF THE JOINTS. ANOTHER MAJOR USE OF SOLDER IS IN ELECTRONICS. THE MIXTURE USED FOR SOLDERING COPPER OR TINNED COPPER WIRE TO TERMINALS OR CONNECTORS IS 60% TIN AND 40% LEAD ALTHOUGH IT HAS CHANGED TO 63/37 OVER THE YEARS. MUCH MORE EXTENSIVE DETAIL IS AVAILABLE ON THE WIKI SITE USING THE SEARCH ON SOLDER.

Thickness plays one of the largest parts. You cant arc weld something thin you can't mig weld something thick(without lots of work) Most metals can weld but some metals weld easier than others. Do you really need something that strong? Maybe you can just braze(kind of like solder but with brass, copper ect) it with a torch? So if you really want help you need to give us more information.
