the best books one can get are the factory service manuals.. can usually find them at a decent price on EBAY or if the car is brand new may have to go thru your dealership, the books generally are written by the engineers who designed the cars, so they are very usefull and offer more information and diagrams than the chilton/haynes types

Haynes Repair Manuals are the best but you already need to know the basics of how to use tools and how an engine and it's support parts works.

Nick, Lethandi... Is on the money. Factory service books are the very best reference manuals to get your hands on. They are current and up to date. Their filled with service techniques and special tools. All service areas for your car have clear concise pictures and explanations.

Haynes are by far the best, lots of pictures, very detailed, and depending on the car, are only about $15.
