What is the Mayan Calendar and Dec 21st,2012?

A friend told me the world is going to end in Dec 21st 2012 because the Mayan Calendar ends. What is all this about? Personally, I don't think it will happen. The world was supposed to end several times already. Please give me an accuarate summary of this prediction.

There is a galactic alignment happening on December 21, 2012. Due to precession of the equinoxes, on that day, the sun will appear to come up through the dark area in the center of the Milky Way.
