I've read conflicting statements on whether or not I should drill into the morter... What is the concensus?

No, don't drill into the morter as it will start it cracking. You can, however, drill into the much harder bricks. They have been heat cured and are very hard. You will need a masonry bit from the hardware store and it will fit into your regular drill. I've done it so I could hand a painting on a brick wall and it was not that difficult. the only reason you should drill into mortar is, its easier drilling. if you are worried about drilling into brick because of moisture put some clear caulk on the fastener when you install it...a hammer drill makes the drilling easier if you have lots to do or if it is a big hole , but for one or two small holes any drill and a masonry bit will do...

There are cement drill bits for doing this. It is ok to drill into brick, block or mortar if you have a good reason.

Its called a hammer drill and masonry bit. You can pick one up at Ace Hardware.

there are drill bits specificly for concrete, joints are better to drill in and easier to patch if hole no longer needed.

you shouldnt drill into brick or block if you can avoid it, drilling into the mortar is the best way
