"A body in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force"
"A body at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force".
This is the way I remember learning it in school.

Inertia is basically when something will keep doing what it is already doing until a force acts upon it. For example, a rock will keep sitting there until something makes it move. Also, a ball will keep rolling on the ground until air resistance and resistance from the ground slow it down and stop it.

It's the continuim of movement. when you're in a car speeding down the road and drop a brick out of the window it dosen't just drop to the ground, it keeps moving forward for a moment. That's inertia.
