Toes have two main functions:-
1. they help us balance
2. they help us walk and run by acting as part of the "spring" that pushes us forward. Try walking without your toe touching the ground to give you some idea of how the toes operate. In this respect the big toe is the major contributor whilst the smallest toe hardly does anything at all. It is of course possible to walk or run without toes - but they do make it easier!

We don't, well, we only need a big toe which helps with balance. The others are a genetic remnant from when we were tree dwelling animals.

MOSTLY FOR BALANCE...but if you should ever lose the use of your hands due to arthritis or a tragic accident, the toes are a viable substitute.
PS: Have you ever seen anyone write with their toes???

if we didnt have toes we'd be falling around all the time, it helps keep our balance, I mean we'd be walking around on stilts without toes which as well you can imagine takes a lot of balance.
