I really want to, but I need someone else's opinion. I have been playing since fourth grade [currently in eighth grade] and I HATE THE FLUTE. Starting highschool, I want to start new and actually do something I enjoy. All my friends think I'm going to do band just because I've been playing for so long, but I'm not that good. All my highschool friends assume that I'm going to be in band... And my private lesson teacher thought I actually wanted to be a proffesional flautist, when I really want to do something in the art area. It makes me angry. So... What should I do??

In your position, I'd quit

First, be honest with yourself about why you want to quit band. Do you just hate the flute? Or do you hate band in general? Do you hate practicing? Do you hate the image of being a band geek? Do you love the music? I hated practicing, but loved marching. Others hate marching but love concert. Still others hate both. Some just don't like the type of music you have to play.

If you just hate the flute, talk with your band director and see if you can switch to another instrument. Or see if there's another outlet for your musical interest, such as private guitar or piano lessons, orchestra, chorus or church choir. Just because your main interest is art, doesn't mean you can't enjoy music as well.

My recommendation would be to give it one year in high school, because high school band is very different. If you still don't like it, then quit. But be sure to explain your feelings to your band director. He/she would be very interested in why you are considering quitting.

Ultimately, you have to follow your heart. Just make sure you are honest with yourself, and you will be doing what's best for you.

The first thing you need to do is discuss this with your parents. Before you have that sit down chat, write out the reasons on a piece of paper of why band is good for you and Why you dislike band. Then write the reasons you want to leave band.
It is your decision to not pursue a music career and it is your right to do so. Make sure the reason you are leaving band is not from an inner disappointment. Out line your desires for the future, What is it you would really like to pursue? Most teenager make choices based on internal feelings and they are not thought out, eventually they regret how wrong they were. Since you are asking, dig deep inside and find out why you want to leave band. I am sure you will make the right choice.

k ive been playing the flute since i was in 3rd grade i am currently in the 12th grade. i played in band since i was a sophmore. i would have to say that marching band is fun but i would rather have not ever been in band during football season cause the games were not as fun. But concert band was always fun. if you arent pasionate about it go ahead and fid something you would rathjer do

Talk to your band director. If it's just flute that you hate, consider switching to another instrument. If it's BAND that you hate...try orchestra or choir. Really, if you love music there's a variety of ways to participate in it even if you're not becoming a professional musician. But talk to your band director first...they should be understanding and want to help you enjoy band enough to stay in it.

Good Luck!

You need to follow your heart. If you don't like playing the flute, don't... I am sure everyone else will admire your stand-point. Don't let any one decide what you should want to do or like to do.... If you want to get in to an art, go for it. Make it known that this is what you want. You will find yourself at peace if you do it sooner rather than later.

Best wishes, and ALWAYS FOLLOW YOUR HEART!!

i have the same problem, but my parents are making me do band in high school. but they said it's only 'cause i hate sports more, and i have to do something extra in order to get into college. if you really don't have any other interests, i suggest you do band, but if you have something else in mid, go ahead and quit.

if you are not happy, quit, no matter what your lesson teacher said. you need to be comfortable with whatever you are going to do. you never know, maybe youll find something else in HS. im going to HS too...but i suck at softball..i wouldnt want to join the softball team if i completely HATED it....so if you dont like it, dont continue.

if you hate it, quit....try other instruments (they don't have to be classical) and even getting into a rock band if you like-without going all punk or emo....i'm a drummer and i don't dress all black or pretend to be depressed
