Wifi is probably the most misunderstood connection in the world.

Wifi only connects to the internet if, and only if, there is an available Access Point! It is NOT automatic nor is it necessairly free. Many locations these days do have free wifi within certain areas. The areas covered by wifi are generally limited to a few hundred feet of the access point. Some ISP's provide paid WiFi access that cover large areas in many cases these will need a special wifi client card or what is commonly called Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) which is a high powered radio with a high gain antenna that will connect over great distances (in some cases 10 miles or more) but your local card within your laptop has a limited range of around 200-400 feet. So if there is a PUBLIC WIFI connector within that range you can connect using wifi.
Otherwise you still need some other form of connection.
