Sounds a lot like Biggles, aka James Bigglesworth, hero of the books by W.E. Johns (1893-1968). Biggles had a sidekick called Algy (Algernon Lacey) and later acquired another one called 'Ginger' Hebblethwaite. The Biggles stories were notable for their pedantic attention to aviation and organisational detail, their uncomplicated faith in British pluck and integrity, their occasional realism about the confusion and terror of air combat, and their rather alarming confidence in the capacity of good chaps to set the world aright. Despite all this, many men young enough to know better (including me, born after their author died) have a special place for Biggles stories in their hearts.
I wouldn't exactly call the Biggles books 'children's books', though - more like 'books for boys', or maybe also for girls who really like air combat.

Sqdrn Leader James Bigglesworth, DFC and Bar!
Actually, the very early Biggles books were not really childrens reading at all - they were almost a documentary of combat flying on the western front, with none of the gory details spared. But after the war, Biggles evolved into a Boy's own hero, having lots of spiffing adventures with 'Algy' Lacey and 'Ginger' Heppelthwaite!
