its just the technology used by vauxhall to conserve fuel, it controls the supply of the fuel-air mixture to the cylinders according to the engines actual needs.

its something to do with cylinder heads
being able to switch between manual and auto on my car is called tiptronic.. think vauxhall call that easytronic
