In order to find out if starch is present in a potato core, you would run a simple test.

By placing drops of iodine on the potato, you will see a black/ blue dot formation form. Wherever you see these dots, there is starch present. The full mechanism of this process is not understood, but so far what is believed is that iodine incorporates itself into the starch and forms bonds, changing the nature of the starch.
