They like warm humid tropical areas. You simply have to look at where all of the species of roach are, only a handfull of the +- 3500 species of roach live in temperate / cold areas, many of these are introduced from other parts of the world which can only survive due to the presence of refuges like buildings, sewers, subways, and kitchens which maintain ideal conditions. It 's only when you get to the tropics theres an explosion in the diversity of species, most of which like dark areas, caves, under logs, burrows, kitchen sinks... but globally there are only a few roaches which are actually pests three of the most common ones are the American roach, the German roach and the Australian roach

Cockroaches live in a wide range of environments around the world. Pest species of cockroaches adapt readily to a variety of environments, but prefer warm conditions such as found within buildings. Many tropical species prefer even warmer environments and do not fare well in the average household. Only a small handful of the 3,500 or so species of cockroach are suited to thrive in the typical home.
The cockroach is also one of the hardiest insects on the planet, capable of living for a month without food. It can also hold its breath for 45 minutes and has the ability to slow down its heart rate.
