I have to write an academic paper on a novel written by an Indian woman writer .can u tell me how i can correlate the recent literary theories to this work.

Is it at all advisable to refer to these theories ?

I would want to know specifically which Native writer you're referring to, but yes, you should consider current movements when addressing this work, especially if it is recent. While your professor may be from the New Critical school, which requires that a work be evaluated internally without external influences, that critical approach doesn't bring forth some of the inherent qualities of Native work.
