I think it will be Joel Piniero.

Well, based on the spring training results so far, it would be easy for someone to go with Timlin. Pineiro has struggled and Timlin is a veteran that has some experience as closer. However, I believe that Pineiro will come through. He was a lights-out pitcher in his first few years in the MLB, and he has regressed quite a bit, but his ERA as a reliever is nearly 2 whole points lower than his ERA as a starter. Pineiro will gain confidence in the pen as the season progresses and he will take over the Red Sox closer role sometime during the season.

Given those choices, I think it'll be Pineiro because Timlin didn't exactly flourish in the situation last season after Papelbon's season-ending injury (which cost Papelbon a shot at the AL RoY award).

That being said, I think Washington will make a trade sooner or later, and Chad Cordero will be Boston's next full-time closer.

Considering the fact that Pineiro, Timlin, and Donnelly all pretty much stink, and Schilling and Papelbon's health issues, I think the Sox will be forced to move either Beckett or Dice-K to the bullpen to be their closer! :)

Desperate times require desperate measures...
