I buy a lot off iTunes -- it has links such as 'if you like this, you might like..." and it also shows playlists that have been created with whatever I bought. I check those out. I also check out the celebrity play lists because they sometimes know some unusual bands.

I also got hooked on a lot of groups off tv -- Grey's Anatomy, the OC, Nip/Tuck all had new, alternative/indie type music that I first heard there. I also read some reviews in magazines. Other recommendations I get from friends or when I'm out or just sorting thru the CDs I see at places like Borders but mostly it's from either on-line or tv...

Yeah, amazon.com is pretty kewl. You rate CD's you already have, and it recommends other stuff you might like. Yahoo! Launchcast has introduced me to some good artists in pretty much the same way, but they're always trying to get me to listen to commercials and, even worse, crappy pop music (yuk)
I also check on http://www.jambase.com to see what live shows are coming to town. Anybody I've never heard of is almost always worth checkin out live, and, you know, if they're good, I'll buy their CD at the show.
Also, my favorite magazine, Relix, gives me a free CD every month with all sorts of up-and-coming artists mixed in with many of my all-time favorites. Now, they're not all great, but every month there's at least one great new artist on the CD.

Amazon recommends me albums based on what I buy. That generally works for me!

Oh, and friend recommendations.
