How can it be the battery when power is coming into my laptop
the battery has had it, but the power should work

Have you checked the event log, start>settings>control panel>administrative tools>event viewer>system log. It will tell you if there's an error.
Check your power setting it might just be a matter of adjusting it.
It could be over heating

Sometimes the ac adaptor attached to your cord does not turn on if you unplug from the back of the computer, then plug it back in again. Try plugging it in from the outlet.

If this does not work, your settings could be set to turn off after a certain time.

This is for Windows XP...

Click on the Start menu, then go to control panel. There you should go to performance and maintenance. In this folder, you will find power options. When you click on this, you will see a variety of options for turning on and off your computer.
