I know when you say 'they must have done' quickly, it sounds like 'they must of done', but the people who write it down - don't you look at it and think 'What does that actually mean?'.

It's bad enough when they say it, but when they write it down like that I realise that they're not really that well educated ! ! !

Personally, I cringe when I see bad spelling, grammar and punctuation.
However, with our education system the way it is, how can we blame our kids?
When my brother was about 10 (he's now 38!) my parents asked his teacher at a parents' evening, why they didn't correct his spelling mistakes. The reply was that the teachers didn't want the children to be demoralised by seeing lots of red biro on their work.
As a result we have extremely confident, but illiterate adults!
On this site, a lot of people ask why those who have presented poorly written questions or answers, why they didn't use the spell-check. Of course, spell check won't pick up on the wrong usage of words, whichever spelling has been used.
Thank you for letting me get that off my chest.

You answered it yourself; must've sounds like 'must of' -- so, as little kids, that's what they thought they were hearing.

English is full of idioms, so they assume that's just another.

It would be nice if students in schools were required to write, and polish, and make the writing perfect. Then they'd learn how to write well and correctly.

I wouldn't be surprised if, some time from now, 'must of' becomes acceptable. (That's how languages change, after all.)

As they say 'must of ' because they have misheard 'must've'
they think that is the way to write it..remedial class in English for them.
About teachers not correcting spelling mistakes...they are ordered not to from the powers that be ..absolutely ridiculous.
PC again.

These people are just not paying attention to what they're writing. This can happen with many homophones.
For example, I can rewrite my first sentence as:
These people are just not paying attention to what their righting.
Anyways, if you're reading something that says "must of", don't trust its content!

And if that upsets you all, think about this - there are teachers out there making the same mistakes. How scary is that? How can we expect the kids to learn from them? Apologies to all the really smart teachers out there but those barely competent few scare me.

Unfortunately, as language evolves and slang becomes more common, standard English becomes a thing of the past!!!!! Most people who us 'of' instead of 'have' also get confused with 'where' and 'were' and are none the wiser as they have done this all the way through school without being challenged.

You're preaching to the choir here. Makes me cringe. My 6 year old can write and spell better than most of today's teenagers.

They're don't know how to spell or they just don't care. Also I think they are meaning "must have", typing "must of", when the contraction would be "must've".

Yes, incorrect grammar or spelling is very irritating to me. What about these:
I am going to lay down instead of I am going to lie down.
I could care less instead of I couldn't care less.
I should have went instead of I should have gone.
I could go on and on; however, I think most people COULDN'T care less!!!
